Kayak size calculator

Quick answerMost adults between 5'4" and 6'0" fit a 10 foot recreational kayak for lakes and slow rivers. Paddlers over 6'2" or over 250 lb should look at 11 to 12 feet, and touring on open water calls for 12 to 14 feet.

How the math works

base length by water type, +1 ft for height over 6'2" or weight over 250 lb, youth boats under 4'10" and 100 lb

Longer hulls track straighter and glide further per stroke; shorter hulls turn quicker and are easier to carry and store. Cockpit length matters as much as hull length for tall paddlers in a sit-in.

Kayak length trades glide against handling. A 12 foot boat covers more water per stroke and holds a straight line in wind; a 9'6" boat turns on a dime down a twisty creek and weighs less to lift onto a car. For recreational paddling on lakes and slow rivers, 10 feet is the default for most adults.

The calculator starts from a base length for your water, adds a foot if you are over 6'2" (legroom) or over 250 lb (volume and capacity), and points children under about 4'10" and 100 lb to 6 foot youth kayaks. It also estimates the rated capacity to look for from your weight plus 25 lb of gear.

Frequently asked questions

What size kayak do I need for my height and weight?

Most adults between 5'4" and 6'0" and under 250 lb fit a 9'6" to 11' recreational kayak. Over 6'2", choose 10'6" to 12' or an open sit-on-top so your legs are not boxed in. Over 250 lb, choose a longer or wider boat rated for at least your weight plus gear divided by 0.7.

Is a longer kayak more stable?

Longer kayaks track straighter and feel steadier in a straight line, but side to side stability comes mainly from width and hull shape. A 30 inch wide 10 foot boat feels more stable when you sit still than a 24 inch wide 14 foot touring kayak.

What size kayak for a tall person?

Over about 6'2", legroom is the limit. Sit-in cockpits on 9 to 10 foot boats often pin your knees. Look at 11 to 12 foot sit-in boats with long cockpits, sit-on-tops with multiple footrest positions, or inflatables with open decks.

On the water: Wear a properly fitted, USCG-approved life jacket every time, dress for the water temperature rather than the air, and check your state and local paddling regulations before you launch.
